Show format[ edit ] A typical season of So You Think You Can Dance is divided between a selection process, during which expert judges select competitors from a wide pool of applicant dancers, and a competition phase, during which these ‘finalists’ more typically referred to as the ‘Top 20’ compete for votes from home viewers. Though it is produced over the course of months, the selection phase is highly edited and usually constitutes only the first 2—4 weeks of aired episodes, with the competition episodes forming the remaining 8—9 weeks of the season.
Open auditions[ edit ] Nigel Lythgoe is co-creator of the So You Think You Can Dance franchise, and has been executive producer and permanent member of the judge’s panel of the U. The open auditions, the first stage in determining a seasons finalists, take place in 5—6 major U. The cities where auditions are held change from season to season but some, such as Los Angeles and New York , have featured in most seasons.
During this stage, dancers perform a brief routine typically a solo, but duet and group routines are allowed as well before a panel of dance experts, usually headed by series creator and executive producer Nigel Lythgoe. This panel then decides on-the-spot whether the dancer demonstrated enough ability and performance value to proceed further. If the dancer exhibited exceptional ability in their performance, judges award “a ticket to Vegas” or in more recent seasons “a ticket to the Academy” , moving them instantly one step forward in the competition.
Alternatively, if judges are on the fence about the dancer, they may ask the contestant to wait until the end of that day’s auditions to participate in a short test of their ability to pick up professional choreography. Callbacks[ edit ] The second stage of the selection process is referred to as “the callbacks” the round has often been held in the city of Las Vegas and also been known as “Vegas Week” for much of the show’s run, but has been called Academy Week since season The callbacks consist of a several-day-long process in which the remaining hopefuls are tested for overall well-rounded dance ability, stamina, creativity and their ability to perform under pressure.
The dancers are put through a battery of rounds that test their ability to pick up various dance styles; these are typically some of the more well-represented genres that are later prominent in the competition phase, such as hip-hop, jazz, ballroom, and contemporary. Additionally the dancers may be asked to perform further solos in styles of their choosing and participate in a group choreography round in which small teams of contestants must display their musicality and ability to communicate professionally by choreographing a performance to a randomly selected piece of music — this challenge is notable as being the only time competitors are asked to choreograph themselves, aside from solos.

Discussion of old movies and the culture that made them. Their careers were just beginning on the Warner Bros. They were married again in their next film together, The Doughgirls She played an ex-hoofer and he played a Navy airman during the war in this raucous comedy which we really have to cover someday. In real life, she actually was an ex-hoofer of sorts, having made her professional debut at thirteen years old as a ballet dancer at the Hollywood Bowl.
The final four dancers—Zack Everhart Jr., Jessica Richens, Valerie Rockey and Ricky Ubeda—perform with All-Stars from previous seasons, including Aaron Turner, Kathryn McCormick and Robert Roldan.
The judges are giving it a standing ovation. The choreographers are ecstatic, and the crowd’s going wild. Jesse jokes that the routine is a representation of the relationship between Mary and Nigel, referencing a crazy leap done in the routine. He also comments that Ricky and Zack look like potheads who haven’t left the house in a week. Nigel makes a joke about his nose and seems to be flipping off someone by rubbing his nose.
His audio is cut and we see a weird shot of a section of the audience sitting completely still, not clapping or reacting in any way. Nigel then asks how the giant playing cards on stage were moving during the routine; Cat tries to jolly out the stagehands behind each of the cards but they’re having none of it.
Nigel says that at first appearance, these two guys are the least likely to tackle this routine. Ricky says, “You’re telling me. I love that they’re letting her wear her red tap shoes. I also love that her tap shoes are more like men’s tap shoes than the high heel versions that a lot of female tappers traditionally wear.
Any information would be most helpful. Born in Kingston Hospital, in Ulster County. I have blonde hair and blue eyes.

In Season For the first time ever, the All-Stars paired up with and choreographed for the finalists. It really was a fantastic week. Of course, there was sadness to accompany the triumph and the horror…. Jenna Johnson and Tucker Knox have been eliminated. The former partners pre-All-Star episodes this season told the mascara zombie that their favorite parts of the competition were meeting each other and becoming best friends. All of them danced solos.
As it used to be all along!
SYTYCD: From Delightful and Inspiring to Slimy and Offensive
I tried to pick my favorite moments of each dance for each picture. They included the Top 20 dancers along with the choreographers, the judges, the backstage crew, etc. It was shot in one continuous take and ended with the Top 20 on the mainstage. It was a technical achievement on all levels. One one of my favorite moments was Jason Glickson dipping Mary Murphy about 10 times before the camera moved away from them.
She was born and raised in Edmonton, Alberta,. Tookey is the eldest child of parents Shelley and Wayne Tookey. This week saw the top four dancers have a final opportunity to show America why they should vote for them. FOX Aaron has had an amazing run this season, especially given that he initially missed out on being included in the top His partnership with Jasmine was a match made in heaven and their combined physicality and chemistry created real magic and many memorable performances.
Aaron has been one of the most successful tappers to ever grace the SYTYCD stage and he has more than shown that tap is a legitimate dance style that should not be underrated. I must admit though, that since the couples have been spilt up, I feel that Aaron has faltered slightly. Aaron has always said that he wants to be an all-star and I think he is well on the way to achieving that ambition.
Despite his lack of formal technique he has survived week after week, improved by leaps and bounds and in doing so he has impressed and surprised just about everyone. Like Aaron, he was blessed in his partnership. Amy is an amazing technical dancer and while they tended to have a lot of fun, light-hearted routines it did not prevent either of them from shining.
I think my favourite routine of his, however, was when he had the honour to be choreographed by and partnered with Allison. FOX While I underestimated Jasmine in the audition process as soon as she hit the big stage it was evident how talented she was and what an amazing spirit she has.

Shahidi has said about the role “I want people to be able to understand that Bela is a highly complex character. She’s full of conflict, self doubt and pain. Bela represents the darker parts of the human psyche. The things she does, you know they’re wrong, but you understand what’s driving her. I had the script revealed to me a few scenes at a time, so that I could portray her throughout the movie with accuracy, and her story and her motives made me feel so conflicted.
I think that’s what we’re aiming for with our audiences, actually, for them to be at once repulsed and fascinated with this character, as her struggles are universally human struggles, but include parts of ourselves we may not want to think about.. She’s a really unique character, I hope I can live up to the role. As well as that, as many stars of psychological thrillers will say, there’s nothing like getting to act out the mental breakdown of a character, a boy having his personality stripped to the meanest and darkest parts of himself.
